Intel releases XMM 8160 multimode modem to deploy 5G market

更新時間: 2019-12-20 18:24:26

Overview of news:Intel today released the Intel® XMM™ 8160 5G modem, a multimode modem optimized to provide 5G connectivity to devices like phones, PCs and broadband access gateways. The release of this product shows that Intel’s determination to lay out the 5G market. To achieve sustained influence and demonstrate its high-tech capabilities,Intel has accelerated the timing of this modem by pulling in the launch by more than a half-year.

What is the benefit of Intel XMMTM 8160

The Intel XMM 8160 is a multimode modem, meaning it will support the new standard for 5G New Radio (NR), including standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) modes, as well as 4G, 3G and 2G legacy radios in a single chipset.

The XMM 8160 5G will support peak speeds up to 6 gigabits per second, making it three to six times faster than the latest LTE modems available today. It will be available in the second half of 2019 and will deliver the features and experiences to accelerate widespread 5G adoption.

With a single-chip multimode baseband capability, the Intel XMM 8160 5G modem will enable manufacturers to design smaller, more energy-efficient devices. it is different from 5G single-mode modem, which is the previously announced competing products.

The XMM 8160 can be achieved 5G and 4G/3G/2G network connections without the two separate modems, and avoids the design complexity, power management and device appearance adjustments faced with single-mode 5G chips.

By adopting a multi-mode solution directly, Intel will offer significant improvements in power consumption, size and scalability. Intel's integrated multimode solution supports LTE and 5G dual connectivity (EN-DC), ensuring that mobile devices are backward compatible with 4G without a 5G network.

The modem offers a variety of advanced technologies to support the new millimeter wave (mmWave) band, 5G NR below 6 GHz (including FDD and TDD bands from 600 MHz to 6 GHz), and download rates of up to 6 Gbps.

The industry's shift to the millimeter wave and IF bands will address the huge demand for more bandwidth for users, devices and networked machines.

In addition, the modem is designed for large-scale applications. With worldwide carrier support, extensive platform certification and extensive original equipment manufacturer (OEM) support, the Intel XMM 8160 modem will provide operators and equipment manufacturers with a fully trusted 5G capability to power their global deployment.

How to evaluate Intel XMMTM 8160

Dr. Cormac Conroy, Intel corporate vice president and general manager of the Communication and Devices Group said:

“Intel’s new XMM 8160 5G modem provides the ideal solution to support large volumes for scaling across multiple device categories to coincide with broad 5G deployments. We are seeing great demand for the advanced feature set of the XMM 8160, such that we made a strategic decision to pull in the launch of this modem by half a year to deliver a leading 5G solution.”

When will be available for the Intel XMM 8160 5G modem

The Intel XMM 8160 5G modem is expected to ship in the second half of 2019. Commercial devices using the Intel XMM 8160 5G modem including phones, PCs and broadband access gateways are expected to be available in the first half of 2020.
